On Friday, August 12, 2016, the Bethune-Bowman Campus participated in the OCSD5 Back-to-School evet at O-W High School. The Olympic themed event took place on the O-W football field and began with a parade of all the participating athletes from each school.  The Bethune-Bowman Campus team was led by principal Lakekia Lewis and the 2016-2017 Teachers of the Year Cathy Lawrence and Katherine Mack. After Vice Chair Board Member Vernon Stephens welcomed the OCSD5 faculty and staff, Superintendent Dr. Jesse Washington read the Charles Swindoll poem “Attitude”.

The first two events were the sack race and the egg race where the Bethune-Bowman Campus was represented by Latanza Garvin, Colleen Whetstone and Ryan Larson. The next event was the hula hoop contest where Tammy Jeffords, Jennifer Kindle, and Vernie Madison represented the Bethune-Bowman Campus. This event marked one of the highlights of the activities as the contest came down to two athletes in a long battle for first place. The egg toss event became one of the most competitive of all the activities as the Bethune-Bowman Campus were represented by John Moorer, Tammy Jeffords, Amy Vartenisian, and Nyoka Woods. The main event of the competition was the Tug-of-War contest. Bethune-Bowman Elementary School eliminated Brookedale in the first round as Bethune-Bowman Middle/High School lost to O-W in a close battle.

After all of the activities, the Bethune-Bowman Campus went back to their tent for bingo and lunch. This was a fantastic time of fellowship before the beginning of a new school year. We are all excited for a great 2016-2017 school year! Go Mohawks!
